Snapshot from 'Discover + Share Wales' on Facebook
Facebook 'Nearby' Places is a method of sharing your location with your connections on Facebook. Using a mobile device and the Facebook application users can 'Check In' to an existing Facebook Place or even create new Facebook Place if a listing doesn't already exist.
'Discover + Share Wales'
With so many visitors to Wales already using Facebook Places we are able to collect this information and use it to show the great Welsh locations people are visiting and sharing with their connections.
The new application available on the Visit Wales Facebook Page has the ability to display Facebook Places grouped by Category or Region, giving potential visitors a real insight on what is available during their stay.
We are able to feature up to 12 categories and will be including seasonal categories to keep the content fresh.
Registering your listing
The system is only able to display Welsh Facebook Places which have been added to our database. Follow these three steps to submit your listing:
1). Create your Facebook Place via a mobile device if a listing doesn't already exist.
2). Claim your Facebook Place listing (even if someone else created it), you are then able to combine this with any existing Facebook Page or even create a new Facebook Page as a Marketing resource for promoting your business/location. This step is optional but gives you greater control on your listing.
3). Complete the form which is accessed via the bottom of the Facebook application along with any accreditations required (See FAQ).
We will review submissions for suitability and required accreditations prior to approving, this is often within 48 working hours.
To get the system rolling we have pre-populated the system with 180+ Welsh Facebook Places that we were able to find relating to existing accredited attractions and activity providers.
Further details of this process can be found in the Facebook Places FAQ.
Getting People to Check In
The great thing about Facebook is that a lot of people are using it, 845 million monthly active Facebook users at the end of December 2011 and over half of these used Facebook via a mobile device, so it's something that lots of your visitors will understand.
By using a little bit of Marketing creativity you could quickly encourage visitors to 'Check In' at your listing, some people offer incentives others just use clever signage at key points where people may be using their mobile (queues, restaurants, rest areas, etc), the Wales Millennium Stadium has even used their large screens at half time to encourage fans to 'Check In' - if you are using a creative way of getting people to 'Check In' we would love to hear about it in the comments below.
Flick through the deck...

Loving this app you guys, just wondering if you’ll be adding an ‘Activities’ category as the theme for this years Wales Tourism Week is focused around Attractions and Activities?
Thanks

We have now enabled the ‘Activities’ section and we will soon be adding a ‘Food & Drink’ category.
If you are a provider in one of these categories and not currently listed make sure you complete the form at the bottom of the system.
Thanks,
Craig.
